The eHealth Exchange consists of federal agencies and non-federal organizations that work together to enhance patient care, streamline disability benefit claims, and improve public health reporting through secure, trusted, and interoperable health information exchanges (HIE). Click here for a primer on how interoperability and HIEs help providers deliver better healthcare. eHealth Exchange enables healthcare organizations to access one of the largest exchange networks for clinical record sharing. Previously limited to government agencies, such as the Social Security Administration (SSA), Veterans Administration (VA), and Department of Defense (DOD), this vital health data is now available to hospitals and other health systems. As the pandemic continues to unfold, HIEs provide crucial data to help medical staff manage COVID-19 patient treatments. The eHealth Exchange also helps healthcare organizations prepare for the Trusted Exchange Framework (TEFCA), which serves as an onramp to universal connectivity with other networks. For an HIE, hospital, or healthcare provider to exchange clinical data with the SSA, VA, and DOD, they must be vetted via the eHealth Exchange.
